This week I retweeted and commented on some interesting tweets I saw from some of my classmates. I found @benwithanimals tweet about conversationalists using drones to help combat poaching to be an interesting and innovative way to use technology. Drones often have capabilities that would be impossible to achieve without them, and they provide so much advantage. In addition, @Jhanvi tweet about the use of holograms instead of wild animals at the circus is another solution involving new technology. This week I followed a couple accounts related to my major, Biological Sciences. @CurrentBiology and @PlosBiology publish recent research from credible journals. An interesting tweet from PlosBiology talked about a possible marker that could evaluate the risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
Before this class I never used Twitter and I’ve always thought of social media being only used for entertainment purposes. However, Writing 39C showed me the value of Twitter for research and advocacy. Twitter is a unique platform in that it allows the user to provide links to research articles, news, and blogs. And if you follow the right people, such as experts like Carl Safina, you will surround yourself with reliable and credible information and sources. Social media allows people from all around the world to come together and advocate for a common goal. Social media can have the power to make global change and make others aware. I will definitely use Twitter in the future not only for research but also for entertainment purposes.
